There are four local rules of our area that must be adhered to, read below and
STAY SAFE!
1. Leg ropes and lifejackets:
We have a full range of life jackets supplied as part of the hire and highly recommend you wear one. The hirer must wear a leg rope at all times until safely back on shore. Your board is your flotation device, so you must keep your leg rope attached. You and any of your participants that you agree for must be able to swim. If there is more than one person on a board, then the person without a leg rope must wear a life jacket. It is NOT a legal requirement to wear a life jacket on a SUP board unless;
you don’t have a leg rope attached.
you are under 10 years of age
and if there are wind warnings from BOM for the area.
2. Obstacles:
Never dive off a SUP board. Shallow water and submerge logs can kill or injure. We are happy for you to swim, but enter the water gently. If you fall off please limit the depth you fall in, this means do a belly flop or a starfish so you don't go in the water to deep, especially near the shore. If you are going to hit an obstacle please return to your knees, standing up at this moment is dangerous.
3. Wind:
Do not use the boards in wind of an average above 35kmh. Check the forecast at WEATHERZONE ECHUCA 48 HOUR FORECAST OR ON YOUR PHONE HERE. If you are stuck in the wind, go to your knees, if you are really struggling go to your belly, get to the shore and call 0400290718. This number can found at emuoutdoors.com. Situations requiring emergency services call 000.
4. Boats:
Navigate away from any boats, get out of their way. Navigate to the right of the river, if you find yourself on the left don’t cross in front of a boat to pass, if it is safe, pass on the left. Avoid house boats, they have inexperienced drivers. Paddle steamers have right of way as they are low maneuverable vessels. If they are honking their horn at you, get out of the way.
WHERE TO PADDLE OUT OF THE CURRENT
Starting in the calm water of the marina, turn left to head upstream.
The most powerful current is in the middle of the river or the outside of the river bend. On the inside of a turn the water will actually push you up river.
Also, sticking close to the bank is easiest, it’s where the current is the slowest. Once up river jump back in the middle and float home.
Here’s a map of the area with the easiest route on it, RED up stream, BLUE float home.
